If you are taking a serious approach in building a career (be in corporate or entrepreneurial), having a mentor gives you tremendous value. I have had the opportunity to build a relationship with my mentor for the last 5 years, and I have learned a bit.
Why I have a mentor:
- To be someone like my mentor one day
- To have some coaching and guidance to maneuver the tricky corporate scene (as I don't have parents in the white collar corporate world)
- To have a pillar of support when hard times come at work
How are my sessions like:
- A committed monthly chat session
- Structured discussion on two topics areas - career skills and life perspectives; sometimes general update on travel trips, a unique development in life, etc
- An agenda sent via email prior to the session
- A summary sent via email after the session
- An annual mentorship renewal ask (to make sure we both are still on the same page)
How to choose a mentor:
- Someone you have chemistry with
- Someone who could help you in your career goals
- Someone you are comfortable to have a regular session with
Pointers to build a relationship with a mentor are available below. I also have an accompanying podcast episode available here and below: https://www.theannualproject.com/podcast/episode/2c1b69f9/ep-26-career-or-building-a-relationship-with-a-mentor. And it is s published on Spotify, Apple Podcast and Google Podcast.
